Farm Happenings
Second-to-last week of the CSA! This week we have lots of hearty winter crops like cabbage and sweet potatoes as well as some of the last vestiges of summer, with lots of peppers in the share.
We still have some spots left in our Fall CSA! Registrations will be closing next week so hurry up and get your spot. The fall CSA membership is only eight weeks (from Oct 23-Dec 18). Shares are smaller and will include 4-5 items weekly. We are also accepting orders for our Thanksgiving bulk boxes of veggies.
We have received several inquiries about purchasing seed garlic, but this year we will not be selling any.
Note from an Apprentice
Hello! I’m Emma and I am a student at UK studying Environmental and Sustainability Studies with a minor in Sustainable Agriculture. I was raised just a few miles away in Georgetown and, although I had a conventional corn-soybean field directly behind my suburban house, I never gave much thought to agriculture until I came to college. I have always cared deeply about the environment and conservation, but I didn’t fully understand the role agriculture plays in both our environmental problems and solutions. Once I got the farming bug, though, it has become all I can think about!
As an environmentalist, it is easy to feel like your individual actions don’t matter. But I realized that I eat three times a day and eating food grown with more responsible practices would actually add up to a huge impact. Eating locally allows me to act on my beliefs of ecological responsibility. And talking to my farmers weekly not only makes me more informed on how my food comes to be, it also makes me be a better community member. Plus, living more in tune with the seasons gives me something to look forward to instead of instant gratification. As an ENS major, I spend a lot of time thinking and talking about problems, problems, problems. I am grateful for this class that lets me actually get in the field and do something tangible. I am learning valuable hard skills that I will be able to take back to my farm one day. Sustainable ag isn’t easy, but everyday I get more confident that it is possible.
